A little Sunday armchair travel today, for all of us still mostly staying close to home and definitely no nearer getting on a plane – a peek inside new book ‘The-Maine-house’. Maine is one of the places that has always been on my travel wish-list, I have always been intrigued by the romantic and unique houses close to the water.
In The Maine House photographer Maura McEvoy and art director, Basha Burwell traveled the length and breadth of Maine for several years in search of houses that capture the state’s singular character. From sparse to joyfully cluttered with magical collections, they are homes created by the people who live in them – artists, writers, fishermen. ‘All distinctive for their ingenuity and individuality, many are have been unchanged over the decades and inhabited by generations of the same family with some ingenious conversions that define the very spirit of Maine’.
The three places that really stole my heart were ‘The Cottage at the End of the Road’ (page 59) filled with worn textiles and treasures collected from all and ‘A Little Lake House’ (page 215) a simply decorated three-roomed cottage on the water with the perfect veranda aspect to soak up the setting sun in the evenings and a tranquil feel. Finally a bit further inland ‘An Antique Cape’ is a clapboard and shingle house stripped back to its bare bones and filled with simple functional furniture. If I could only pick one . . .
A great book if you are anything like me and a little obsessed by waterside living, a love of old wooden buildings and peeking into other people’s lives.
