Time to celebrate Dahlia season and get in a comfy chair with a copy of Discovering Dahlias by Erin Benzakein of Floret Farm. I don’t know about you, but it has taken my Dahlias an age to get going this year, with the cold spring and grey rainy, windy summer they are only just starting to pick up steam. At only half their predicted growing height – they do have some blooms now smiling up at the late summer sun. Ours are not very photogenic yet but luckily Discovering Dahlias is packed with stunning photographs and a complete guide to growing, harvesting and arranging these magical blousy flowers.
I am sharing all my favourite peachy, creamy, dreamy pages here as my own collection this year is decidedly orange and red. Our Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’ got eaten by slugs and some of the tubers were not exactly what I ordered?! But in my next post, you might catch a glimpse of this year’s Dahlia season favourites as I will harvest some for the table in the greenhouse and indoor windowsills.
I have all the Floret books and refer to them often and this beautiful volume even includes tips and info on breeding your own varieties, something I know folks really get into.
