Sorry I am a week behind with our June cottage garden update. We’ve been rained on for what feels like endless weeks – not a complaint as last year we were gasping for water from March! But . . . it does mean that lots of the blooms have rotted in the soggy ground before self seeding – my favourite planting technique 😉 – and others are languishing in pots and cell trays as the earth is too wet to plant out. We have had another day of 50mph winds knocking most things sideways yesterday and a fox that has decided to dig up two of the new planting spaces full of the seedlings we have managed to plant out and rooting up all my beloved coreopsis and stocks. Top Tip – do not use chicken manure pellets anywhere unless you are in a fox-free neighbourhood! And grow Schizanthus x wisetonensis Butterfly Plant ‘Dr. Badger’s Hybrids’ Mix from Sarah Raven – they are magical. You can peek at them below (on the chair in the greenhouse).
Destruction and broken spirits aside, the greenhouse is a safe haven filled with the scent of Black Cherry Tomatoes plumping up and calendula flowering away. We still do not have a floor down due to Brexit and pandemic shortages but Wallis is happy rolling around on the warm weed suppressant – silver linings!
Outside the dahlias are still hugging the ground waiting for some real sunshine and the sweet peas are running wild, our beetroot, spring onions, wild strawberries and mange tout peas are abundant and delicious.
