We recently went to London for a meeting (exciting new handmade things coming soon to TFK) and whilst we were there got a great tip for a secret city garden – the gorgeous herb and flower garden at The Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Road.
With beautifully laid out beds the herb garden is home to many medicinal, culinary, aromatic and dye plants. In between light showers, the day was hazy and insects were dizzy gathering pollen – flitting from flower to flower.
With a greenhouse and cold frames in the Victorian section of the garden. I loved peeping inside at the variegated geraniums all with rainbow leaves – swoon!
In this modest garden behind the museum, you will find over 170 different plants. Providing a valuable urban habitat for insects, birds and butterflies as well as a useful learning resource for visiting schoolchildren and others interested in plants and garden ecology (me!).
Roses everywhere, drooping, heavy with blooms in bright pink, pale blush and white.
We were so excited to have an hour poking around and snapping pictures before running back to the car before our parking ticket ran out. The period and herb gardens are open now until the end of October and I would highly recommend if you find yourself with an hour (or more) to spare in the area. We hope to actually get inside the Geffrye next time!
