I am so happy to finally share these photos that Dean and I styled and took at a beautiful country home in the Lake District. The house was completely redecorated (and in most places rebuilt) by Field Day Interior Design Studio with interior decor that takes inspiration from the breathtaking surroundings.
After a long drive up north, we left the motorway and made our way along the winding roads past Lake Windemere that lead towards Coniston Water. We arrived at dusk, made a hot chocolate and fell into our bed in a renovated barn. Excitedly getting up the next day to see the home we were going to shoot over the next couple of days.
Inspired by the idea of seeing the landscape through the eyes of the Lakes’ literary greats: Wordsworth, Ruskin, Coleridge & Beatrix Potter – Kat and Jess have created a cosy home that can take a few knocks and stand up to the muddy trail of boots worn by the family members and guests that will use the house when they are visiting the lakes for some down time.
A huge table, mismatched furniture and eBay finds jostle alongside simple contemporary crockery and glassware in the dining area. Comfy chairs are dotted around the whole house with stunning views out over the beautiful garden, Coniston and beyond.
Maps of the local area on the walls are part decoration part reference.The kitchen is enormous but still feels homely, with worn wood, rustic fittings and sinks at either end. With amazing gardening team Kathleen and Alan – who design and manage the beautiful grounds, we gathered foliage and flowers, berries and branches to decorate the rooms and windowsills.
Antique beams and metal work – frame views through the open plan dining and cooking area.I was quite happy the owner arrived just after we had cleared all this away and had hit the road home, as I am not sure if he would have loved finding half his garden in the sink?!
The living room floods with light coming in through double doors that lead out onto the garden, but has a cosy and darker seating area towards the heart of the home and under the stairs. Chunky knits and wool fabrics keep it contemporary but country and cosy by the fireside. The old cupboard in the stone wall is original to the house.
We kept our lens away from anything tech, you know me, I am not one for wires, television sets or stereo equipment 😉 – but luckily a piano and record player keep guests busy and musically entertained here. While they shelter indoors on bad weather days and at family gatherings.
This little corner was another favourite. In the lounge area still – (this large room is divided into four zones – desk, seating, music and this). The faded coral velvet chaise looks so inviting next to the dark wood sideboard and the oversized lamp has a rustic finish to match the rough plaster wall.
With established vegetable patches, beautiful borders and fruit trees in the garden, there were things to discover around every corner. I hope you will come back soon to see the upstairs and more
