SIMPLE AND CHIC WINDOWS WITH MADE TO MEASURE BLINDS

When we fell in love with our house, it definitely was not for it’s windows – (all of which have or will be replaced). The place has great light but bungalows do tend to have wider style windows and with the husbands aversion to ‘fussy’ curtains I wasn’t sure what to do with these mammoth rectangles?! Curtains are out – (too much cat fur) – so when Hillarys offered me a discount to try out their made to measure service I said yes yes yes – please!

In our old apartment I made roman blinds for the living room, but they were only three small windows, and the sewing of them was time consuming but manageable. Here the windows are over 2m wide so I thought I’d best leave it to the professionals – enter Gordon my Hillarys saviour.

With a huge choice including – Roller, Roman, Shutters and Venetian made to measure Blinds, plus all kinds or edging, trims and extras – the customisation possibilities with Hillarysare endless. We wanted to keep our windows dressed quite simply to keep the focus on the rooms, luckily or decision making could have taken an age!

I have to praise the patience of Gordon, he came armed with swatch books galore full of all sorts of fabrics and examples, I had my heart set on Roman’s but with such large windows I also wondered if all the pleats of fabric might be too much? Then I started looking at the roller blinds, one of my friends has them in her lovely light living room and I liked their simple, clean lines and how the light was defused through them. After a good hour of measuring up, answers to all my many questions and fabric changes of heart – some decisions were finally made.

I admit that a week later I changed my mind on one of the colours and went for a more sheer grey for more light, I feared for G’s sanity but he took it all in his stride! Final choices were a roller blind in simple chic ‘Cordova Grey’ (top swatch above also blackout for a good nights sleep) with a plain edge finish in the bedroom and two in a Morgan FR silver – which is actually a sheer grey for the living room/temporary office. We also chose lovely antique brass pulls to blend in better with our eclectic decor.

All we had in the bedroom before was a sheer linen curtain hanging up for privacy, and we were woken up at sunrise in the Spring and Summer. Now we have moved into the front bedroom, the neighbours lamp post shines in at night and the sun reflects up off our beach style front garden in the day – not complaining I love the brightness – but blackout was a great choice in here. Now we can actually get a good nights sleep and can wake up on our own terms.

As soon as we raise the blind the light floods in, it reminds me of being on stage and a theatre curtain lifting, for first act – we wave at all the neighbours and dog walkers (as we are still yet to put a fence up)!

The living room is dual aspect so light streams in from two sides, so in here we wanted blinds for privacy, shade in the summer and to stop the sun bleaching all the soft furnishings.

It was the least fussing and stress we have done on any interior design/remodelling project in this house so far, great service, the blinds were ready within a couple of weeks and Gordon came back to fit them, we will definitely be getting him back in to furnish the other windows when they ready for some simple fuss free adornment! 😉
