I was super excited when my friends over at Ryland Peters and Small got in touch about Niki Brantmark’s new book The Scandinavian Home. This style of interiors are all about working with light and all my favourite greys, whites and shadowy tones spill from the pages. Here are a few peeks into the homes featured inside – crumpled linens, dream shelving, unusual lighting, un-fitted kitchens and views for days.
There is a special light in Scandinavia – all those long summer days and then the reflection from the snow in the winter months. Niki’s second book is full of interesting ideas and style, homely and livable interiors that work at one with nature and take inspiration from their city, village, coast or forest surroundings. Chapter one guides you through Urban Living from the bohemian to the minimalist and beyond.
In chapter two we travel to the country for homes that are eclectic, serene and elegant.
This bathroom in Tone Kroken’s island home is just magic – all dusky hues and patina with a perfectly imperfect textured wall. Her amazing outside living space is shared at the bottom of my post, I think you are going to love it!
From concrete floors and furniture pieces with strong forms, large windows and darker tones, to all white walls and wood, alongside natural colour and texture with wool or leather. The contrasts from city and country living are visible but the same light and considered sense of style flows through all the homes.
The final chapter – Rural Retreats includes a mountain cabin, beach house, and rustic summer cottage. Having somewhere to escape to is important to many Scandinavians – same here (even though my escape is just twenty meters down the garden)! Remember the island retreat I mentioned earlier? Well, isn’t this covered room outdoors below – just a dream? All that white with pale accessories and the sprigs of green here and there make it feel really bright, fresh and inviting.
